Water Damage

Using preventive measures is more cost effective than spending money on water damage repairs. Did you know that water damage is the number one cause that can weaken your home’s foundation? Damp wood can be inviting to unwanted pests like termites, carpenter ants, mold and mildew. No one wants to think about what’s about to go wrong and a plumbing emergency, but it can save you later.

Check for Leaks

A persistent leak can lead to mold and mildew, termites and wood rot, which opens up a whole new can of problems. If you notice a leak and fix it soon after it starts, you can avoid long term damage.

  • Check for dark spots under pipes and in the cabinets, drip marks, and stains on the ceiling.
  • Every year inspect the roof for missing, loose, or damaged shingles.

Ensure Good Drainage

If you don’t have proper drainage in place you can weaken the foundation and cause cracks allowing water to enter your home.

  • Make sure to clean your gutters. A clogged gutter can send excess water down the side of your house which can cause damage to the foundation and siding.
  • Check the downspouts to ensure they are moving water 5 to 10 feet away from your home
  • Make sure everything is properly graded. If your yard has a slope it will help push the water away from your foundation.

How’s Your Sump Pump

Sump pumps can be a lifesaver during storms if it is working properly. But waiting until a bad storm to find out that it is broken is not ideal. It is recommended by professionals to check your sump pump once a year, but multiple times during a storm season. Here are the steps to check your sump pump:

  • Fill your sump pump slowly with water and watch for the float to rise.
  • Once the float has risen, it should trigger the pump to turn on and drain the water.
